WW2 & Communism Historical Free Tour

Behind the pastel façades of the Old Town sits a much harder history, and this tour meets at Franciscan Square (Františkánske námestie) to walk straight into it: the wartime Slovak State's collaboration with Nazi Germany, the deportation of the country's Jewish community, and the Holocaust memorial that now stands where the city's grand Neolog Synagogue was demolished to make way for a Communist-era bridge.

From there the walk moves into the decades after 1948, when Czechoslovakia sat behind the Iron Curtain — the crushed hopes of the 1968 Prague Spring, the concrete tower blocks of Petržalka rising across the river as a showcase of socialist housing, and the quiet, determined protests that helped bring the regime down in 1989. It's a sober, clear-eyed counterweight to the fairy-tale version of the city.
