Most visitors see Palma from a beach or a cruise ship, but the city behind the harbour has a long history of its own. Romans, Muslims and the Crown of Aragon all ruled it, and James I's conquest of 1229 set the pattern of the old town you walk today: La Seu cathedral rising over the bay, the Almudaina palace beside it on the site of the Muslim alcazar, and a tangle of lanes that hides noble courtyards and the old Jewish quarter.
There are two free tours. The Palma de Mallorca Free Walking Tour is the classic introduction to the old town, from the cathedral and the Almudaina to the courtyards and the Jewish quarter. The Mysteries and Legends Free Tour runs in the evening, in Spanish, and follows the city's darker stories from the Muslim walls to the cathedral.

What to see in Palma
La Seu, Palma's cathedral, is one of the largest Gothic churches in Europe, and Antoni Gaudí worked on its interior in the early 20th century. Next to it, the Almudaina palace began as a Muslim fortress and is still used by the Spanish royal family for official events. The Arab Baths nearby are one of the few buildings left from Muslim Palma.
Above the city, round Bellver Castle has views over the whole bay. Back in the centre, look through open doorways for the stone patios of the old noble houses. The city's official tourism site, Visit Palma, lists opening times and events.
Getting around and when to go
The old town is walkable; buses link the centre with the airport, the port and the beaches. April to June and September to October are the best months. For more Spanish cities with free tours, see Barcelona and Valencia, both a short flight or ferry away, and the month-by-month guide.
Good to know before you go
Palma gets very busy when several cruise ships are in port. Early morning and evening tours are calmer, and the old town empties out after the ships leave.
The cathedral's interior, including the Gaudí work, needs a ticket. Visit on a sunny morning to see the rose window light up the nave.
The historic Sóller train leaves from Plaza de España, the same square where the free tours meet, and is an easy half-day trip into the mountains.
July and August are hot and crowded. Spring and autumn are better for walking, and the sea is still warm in September and October.
