Free walking tours in Toledo

Toledo sits on a rocky hill wrapped on three sides by the river Tagus, which is why so much of it survived: the city could only grow upwards and inwards. The result is one of the densest historic centres in Spain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Christian, Muslim and Jewish Toledo left buildings within a few minutes' walk of each other. Streets are narrow, steep and easy to get lost in.

The free walking tour gives you the outline in under two hours. From Plaza de Zocodover it goes to the Alcázar, through Plaza Mayor to the Primate Cathedral, up to the Jesuit church area for a view over the rooftops, and into the Jewish quarter past the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes. It finishes at the Mirador Virgen de Gracia, above the river.

What to see in Toledo

The Primate Cathedral is one of the great Gothic churches of Spain, with a sacristy full of El Greco paintings; tickets and hours are on the official cathedral website. The church of Santo Tomé holds El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz, and the Jewish quarter keeps two medieval synagogues, Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito, the second now home to the Sephardic Museum.

At the top of the town, the Alcázar houses the Army Museum. Down on the western edge, San Juan de los Reyes was built by Isabella and Ferdinand and has one of the most photographed cloisters in the country.

Getting around and when to go

Walk inside the walls; cars are more trouble than help. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, and summer afternoons are hot on the exposed hilltop. Many visitors combine Toledo with a few days in Madrid, where there is a free tour as well. See the month-by-month guide for timing.

Good to know before you go

  • Toledo is an easy day trip from Madrid: the high-speed train from Atocha takes around half an hour. Book a morning tour if you are coming for the day.
  • The old town is steep. A free public escalator climbs from the Recaredo car park near the city walls to the upper town and saves a hard climb.
  • The cathedral, the synagogues and the church of Santo Tomé each charge their own entry. The tour shows you where they are; plan the interiors for the afternoon.
  • For the classic panorama of the whole city, cross the river to the Mirador del Valle, best at sunset. It is a taxi or tourist-bus ride from the centre.
