From Széll Kálmán Square the route climbs into the Castle District, a UNESCO World Heritage hilltop that has been fought over by Mongols, Ottomans and the Red Army and rebuilt every time. Your guide walks you past the Neo-Gothic wings of the National Archives and the ruined tower of the Church of Mary Magdalene before reaching Matthias Church, where Hungarian kings — and later Habsburg emperors — were crowned beneath its diamond-patterned roof tiles.
The walk ends at Fisherman's Bastion, seven fairy-tale turrets built in 1902 not for defense but purely for the view — and it delivers, with all of Pest, the Danube and the Parliament spread out below.
