Top things to do in Vienna
Start at the heart of it all: the gothic spire of St Stephen's Cathedral marks the center of the old town, and from its steps you can walk the whole imperial core in an afternoon. The Hofburg, the Habsburgs' winter palace, sprawls across a series of courtyards that hold the Imperial Apartments, the Sisi Museum and the Spanish Riding School's Lipizzaner stallions.
Loop around on the Ringstrasse, the grand 19th-century boulevard that replaced the medieval walls with the State Opera, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the neo-Gothic City Hall, then cross the city to Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs' sprawling summer palace, for gardens that rival Versailles. Save time for the Prater, the historic amusement park where the giant Ferris wheel has been turning since 1897.
